Sam's work combines imagery typical of classical portraiture with a cartoon style. The portraits began with simple cartoon balloon-like heads. Although the pictures appear grotesque, many of their subject’s faces are cute, kitsch and innocent. This combination of elements creates a sinister mood. By replicating the pastoral settings and austere poses one associates with traditional English portraiture, the artist creates an unsettling and unique comic pathos.
