Signal Gallery presents its autumn exhibition showcasing three exceptionally strong abstract artists - Barbara Steinberg, Frixos Papantoniou and Dipesh Parmar. Each artist successfully finds a gateway into a potent imaginative world through his or her canvases. All three artists prepare their works meticulously so that what appears spontaneous or even random is in fact deeply thought out.

Barbara Steinberg

In Time of Flood

oil on Canvas
117 x 122cm

Barbara Steinberg studied at Yale University and at California University . She began her career as a painter, but then spent twenty years as a sculptor. After moving to London she continued to exhibit and receive commissions throughout the UK . Her solo shows include the Queens Hall Edinburgh, Phillips Gallery and the Allsop Gallery. She has also exhibited in a large number of group shows in London .

More recently Barbara's interest in landscape has drawn her back to painting. Initially her works were representational but over time they have evolved into a painterly abstract style that has the potency to depict not only the light and colour of a place but also seems to look further into another plane of legend, myth and dream. Barbara's recent works, that we are showing, are remarkable for their power and vibrancy.

Frixos Papantoniou

UNT.06.E

Oil on Canvas
61 x 61cm

Cyprus-born artist Frixos Papantoniou studied Fine Art at Kingston University and at the Institute of Education , University of London . In Cyprus his work is included in a number of private and public collections. Frixos has exhibited widely throughout the UK in solo and group shows, notably his work was included in Pastels Today, at the Mall Galleries and at the Sefton Open at the Atkinson Art Gallery where he was awarded a runner up prize. Also, he was the 2003 winner of the BDC Studio Award for Wellmade 3, at Fresh Art. Most recently his work was short-listed for the Celeste Art Prize.

Frixos produces work of exceptional beauty and stillness. The form of each work is revealed to the artist through a gradual process of layering where the internal logic of the piece unfolds until a balance is achieved and the emotional content is exposed. The artists' vision is gentle and his interest is not to instruct the viewer in what they should feel about his work. Therefore these attractive works are cool and tender, with a depth that comes from closer inspection and deeper understanding.

Dipesh Parmar

Sleeper

oil on canvas
150 x 120cm

Dipesh Parmar studied at Brighton University . Since 1995 Dipesh has been exhibited mostly in Brighton where he has had numerous solo shows including the Phoenix Art Gallery and the Red Roaster Gallery. He has also taken part in many group shows in London and has shown in New York . He was also short-listed for the Celeste Art Prize this year.

Dipesh is inspired by the Deconstructivist Theories of architects such as Zaha Hadid and Daniel Liebeskind. The influences of architecture and futuristic technology are intricately and boldly evident in Dipesh's stunning work. They seem to speak of the complexity of modern life with its myriad connections and collisions that have the effect of evolving our senses. He sees his works as glimpses into the future of visual imagery and environments, both beautiful and terrifying.
