Jan 11th - 23rd Feb 2008 Say it as it is Signal Gallery kicks off its 2008 series of exhibitions with a group show of four artists who are not shy of showing us how it is - as they see it. Politics, anger, isolation and 'street edge' all happily co-exist. As befits the darker subject matter the works are held together by an emphasis on a mostly monochrome palette. The artists are Guy Denning, Harry Simmonds, Holly Thoburn and Barbara Walker. |

March 2008 John Squire
Signal Gallery is delighted to announce that they are presenting the third solo exhibition of John Squire's work from 6th March - 6th April 2008. Since focusing on his artwork full time, John Squire has developed a distinct and mature identity within his aesthetic. Whilst working within an overarching abstract format, his focus and attention to the raw materials controls the direction of the final image. Often choosing Hessians and natural fabrics as his canvas, a tension is built between the back and foreground. Squire's introduction of mixed media, including brown paper, wax and sand, forms a landscape of pattern and depth with layers of transparency leaving traces of the brushes journey. |
Squire focuses on the pure act of mark making, the primitive gesture of the brush stroke, layered marks and negative spaces within the canvas. Within recent work the canvas is marked and reversed to leave the stained, faded imprint of the original image creating a ghostly remnant of the author's hand. For his show at the Signal Gallery, Squire will continue this journey of exploration of materials and the creative gesture. He will introduce new materials with an overall identity of Englishness tying the collection together.
